We were able to enjoy good conversation and food together. I took a few minutes to share some thoughts about Christmas. I share them here as well.

We all have lots of memories and feelings about Christmas, most of them positive. The majority of them revolved around gatherings of family and friends, food, and giving of gifts. While these things can be wonderful in themselves, they are not the true essence of Christmas. So the question is, what is the essence of Christmas?
We saw the beginnings of it a few weeks ago as we looked at John 1. John records that Jesus was the Word, and was and is eternal, is God, and is the life and light of the world.
God wants to be in relationship with each individual, but that relationship is hindered by sin. That means we are distant from God. Christmas means that God took the initiative. John records that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (literally - pitched his tent among us). The Message translates it this way: "The Word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighbourhood." God didn't wait for us to become good enough to come to Him. He came to us. That is the significance of Christmas.
A name that weas to be given to Jesus was Emmanuel, which means "God with us." He is with us, in our neighbourhoof, not in some distant ethereal existence. We can truly experience Christmas when we recognize Jesus as God with us and allow Him into our lives to change us from the inside out.
So, Christmas can be made into something superficial, such as chintzy decorations and expensive gifts that we give to people we don't like, or it can be about the truth that God gave the greatest gift, Jesus, so that we could be in relationship with Him. We celebrate Christmas in ways that have meaning, but often the meaning gets lost because we forget, or it's not communicated from one generation to the next. My English teacher in grade 12 (I think) told us about what she did when she cooked a ham: she would cut off the end of the ham and then put it in the pan. Her daughter asked her why she did this, and she said, "Because your grandma always did that." So, they asked the girl's grandma why she cut off the end of the ham before cooking it, and she replied, "Because my mother always did that." So, they then talked to the girl's great-grandmother and asked why she cut off the end of the ham before cooking it. Her reply? "Because the pan was too small."
We often do things because that's the way they've always been done. Why do we give gifts at Christmas? Some do it because they feel obligated. Others like the warm feelings they get from giving gifts. But gift-giving at Christmas stems from the first Giver, who gave His Son. Jesus is the greatest gift. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that He gave...."

Only when you receive the first and greatest Gift can you truly appreciate the significance of Christmas. I trust that is Christmas for you. If not, it can be. You'll experience Christmas as you never had before!

Blessings,
David

December 3 - Session Ten

While we are not able to meet this week, we can still consider the truths of the Bible together.
John 1:14-18 (The Message)
The Word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, generous inside and out, true from start to finish.
John pointed him out and called, "This is the One! The One I told you was coming after me but in fact was ahead of me. He has always been ahead of me, always had the first word."
We all live off his generous bounty, gift after gift after gift. We got the basics from Moses, and then this exuberant giving and receiving, this endless knowing and understanding--all this came through Jesus, the Messiah. No one has ever seen God, not so much as a glimpse. This one-of-a-kind God-expression, who exists at the very heart of the Father, has made him plain as day.
For reflection/discussion:
1. What do you feel when you read that Jesus "moved into the neighborhood"?
2. How does John compare Jesus with Moses?
3. What is the significance of Jesus becoming flesh?
4. What is your favourite part of your Christmas celebrations?

To Go:
Take some time to look at the following verses in light of Jesus revealing God to us.
John 14:1-14
Isaiah 9:1-7
Isaiah 40
2 Timothy 1:8-12

Be blessed, and may you experience the joys of a Christmas centred on Jesus!
David

November 26 - Session Nine

For Here:
Take a look at what John has to say about Jesus coming into the world. Then consider the questions that follow.
John 1:10-13 (NLT)
He came into the world he created, but the world didn't recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn-not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.

For reflection:
1. We’re glad you have taken the time to join us for conversation, fun and food. We want to get to know God better, and desire to do that in relationship with one another.

In this session, we want to look at what being a follower of Jesus means, and discuss it together.
For Here:
Take a look together at one instance where Jesus called one of His disciples. The verses are included below for your convenience, but you are welcome to read them in your own Bible as well. After reading the verses together, consider the questions that follow. The object is to get everyone thinking, not necessarily to provide one right answer.
.

Matthew 9:9-13 (NLT)
Jesus Calls Matthew
9 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him.
10 Later, Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. 11 But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with such scum?”
12 When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.” 13 Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

For discussion/reflection:

What do you think Jesus meant when He said to Matthew, “follow me and be my disciple”?
Why did the Pharisees respond the way they did?
Have you ever found yourself in the position of the Pharisees?
In light of Jesus’ words and actions recorded by Matthew, who should followers of Jesus spend their time with?

To Go:
Take some time this week to read the following verses and consider what they tell us about being a disciple in light of what we learned together from Matthew’s experience. Why do you spend your money on junk food, your hard-earned cash on cotton candy?Listen to me, listen well: Eat only the best, fill yourself with only the finest. Pay attention, come close now, listen carefully to my life-giving, life-nourishing words.I'm making a lasting covenant commitment with you, the same that I made with David: sure, solid, enduring love. I set him up as a witness to the nations, made him a prince and leader of the nations, And now I'm doing it to you: You'll summon nations you've never heard of, and nations who've never heard of you will come running to you Because of me, your God, because The Holy of Israel has honored you."
6-7Seek God while he's here to be found, pray to him while he's close at hand.Let the wicked abandon their way of life and the evil their way of thinking.Let them come back to God, who is merciful, come back to our God, who is lavish with forgiveness.
8-11"I don't think the way you think. The way you work isn't the way I work." God's Decree. "For as the sky soars high above earth, so the way I work surpasses the way you work, and the way I think is beyond the way you think.Just as rain and snow descend from the skies and don't go back until they've watered the earth, Doing their work of making things grow and blossom, producing seed for farmers and food for the hungry, So will the words that come out of my mouth not come back empty-handed. They'll do the work I sent them to do, they'll complete the assignment I gave them.
12-13"So you'll go out in joy, you'll be led into a whole and complete life. The mountains and hills will lead the parade, bursting with song. All the trees of the forest will join the procession, exuberant with applause. No more thistles, but giant sequoias, no more thornbushes, but stately pines—Monuments to me, to God, living and lasting evidence of God."

For discussion/reflection:
What do you think is being said about spirituality here?
Where are you in your spiritual search?
How do you respond to what God says in Isaiah 55?
Any other questions you want to discuss?

To Go:
Take some time this week to read the following verses and consider what they tell us about prayer, especially in light of what we read together in Isaiah 55. The verses are included below for your convenience, but you are welcome to read them in your own Bible as well. After reading the verses together, consider the questions that follow. The object is to get everyone thinking, not to provide one right answer.

Luke 11:1-13 (The Message)
1 One day he was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said, "Master, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples." 2-4So he said, "When you pray, say, Father, Reveal who you are. Set the world right. Keep us alive with three square meals. Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others. Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil."
5-6Then he said, "Imagine what would happen if you went to a friend in the middle of the night and said, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread. An old friend traveling through just showed up, and I don't have a thing on hand.'
7"The friend answers from his bed, 'Don't bother me. The door's locked; my children are all down for the night; I can't get up to give you anything.'
8"But let me tell you, even if he won't get up because he's a friend, if you stand your ground, knocking and waking all the neighbours, he'll finally get up and get you whatever you need.
9"Here's what I'm saying: Ask and you'll get; Seek and you'll find; Knock and the door will open.
10-13"Don't bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This is not a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we're in. If your little boy asks for a serving of fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? If your little girl asks for an egg, do you trick her with a spider? As bad as you are, you wouldn't think of such a thing—you're at least decent to your own children. And don't you think the Father who conceived you in love will give the Holy Spirit when you ask him?"
For discussion/reflection:

Why do you think Jesus talked about prayer here?
What does His teaching tell us about prayer?
What does His teaching tell us about God?
How does prayer factor into your life (if it does)?

To Go:
Take some time this week to read the following verses and consider what they tell us about prayer, especially in light of what we saw in Jesus’ teaching in Luke 11. You can also look them up at http://www.biblegateway.com/.

Matthew 6:5-18

Hebrews 11:1-6

Philippians 4:4-7

We’re always happy to hear from you!
Leave comments on the blog (click on “_ comments” at the bottom of the posting).
Blessings,
David

Welcome: Our First Session

October 1, 2009
We began a small group experience this evening. The following is what we looked at together. I will post the material from our sessions, so that if you need to miss one, you can catch up on things here!
Please feel free to leave comments in the comments section at the bottom of each posting. Just click where it says "_ Comments".

To begin our sessions together, let’s consider God’s nature and character towards us, and our understanding and experience of God.

For here:
Take a look at some stories that Jesus told. They are included below for your convenience, but you are welcome to read them in your own Bible as well. After reading the stories together, consider the questions that follow. The object is to get everyone thinking, not to provide one right answer.

Luke 15 (The Message)

The Story of the Lost Sheep
1-3By this time a lot of men and women of doubtful reputation were hanging around Jesus, listening intently. The Pharisees and religion scholars were not pleased, not at all pleased. They growled, "He takes in sinners and eats meals with them, treating them like old friends." Their grumbling triggered this story.
4-7"Suppose one of you had a hundred sheep and lost one. Wouldn't you leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the lost one until you found it? When found, you can be sure you would put it across your shoulders, rejoicing, and when you got home call in your friends and neighbors, saying, 'Celebrate with me! I've found my lost sheep!' Count on it—there's more joy in heaven over one sinner's rescued life than over ninety-nine good people in no need of rescue.
The Story of the Lost Coin
8-10"Or imagine a woman who has ten coins and loses one. Won't she light a lamp and scour the house, looking in every nook and cranny until she finds it? And when she finds it you can be sure she'll call her friends and neighbors: 'Celebrate with me! I found my lost coin!' Count on it—that's the kind of party God's angels throw every time one lost soul turns to God."
The Story of the Lost Son
11-12Then he said, "There was once a man who had two sons. The younger said to his father, 'Father, I want right now what's coming to me.'
12-16"So the father divided the property between them. It wasn't long before the younger son packed his bags and left for a distant country. There, undisciplined and dissipated, he wasted everything he had. After he had gone through all his money, there was a bad famine all through that country and he began to hurt. He signed on with a citizen there who assigned him to his fields to slop the pigs. He was so hungry he would have eaten the corncobs in the pig slop, but no one would give him any.
17-20"That brought him to his senses. He said, 'All those farmhands working for my father sit down to three meals a day, and here I am starving to death. I'm going back to my father. I'll say to him, Father, I've sinned against God, I've sinned before you; I don't deserve to be called your son. Take me on as a hired hand.' He got right up and went home to his father.
20-21"When he was still a long way off, his father saw him. His heart pounding, he ran out, embraced him, and kissed him. The son started his speech: 'Father, I've sinned against God, I've sinned before you; I don't deserve to be called your son ever again.'
22-24"But the father wasn't listening. He was calling to the servants, 'Quick. Bring a clean set of clothes and dress him. Put the family ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Then get a grain-fed heifer and roast it. We're going to feast! We're going to have a wonderful time! My son is here—given up for dead and now alive! Given up for lost and now found!' And they began to have a wonderful time.
25-27"All this time his older son was out in the field. When the day's work was done he came in. As he approached the house, he heard the music and dancing. Calling over one of the houseboys, he asked what was going on. He told him, 'Your brother came home. Your father has ordered a feast—barbecued beef!—because he has him home safe and sound.'
28-30"The older brother stalked off in an angry sulk and refused to join in. His father came out and tried to talk to him, but he wouldn't listen. The son said, 'Look how many years I've stayed here serving you, never giving you one moment of grief, but have you ever thrown a party for me and my friends? Then this son of yours who has thrown away your money on whores shows up and you go all out with a feast!'
31-32"His father said, 'Son, you don't understand. You're with me all the time, and everything that is mine is yours—but this is a wonderful time, and we had to celebrate. This brother of yours was dead, and he's alive! He was lost, and he's found!'"

After reading Jesus' stories, consider the following questions:
Why do you think Jesus told these stories?
What do these stories tell us about God?
What has been your experience or understanding of God?
How does reading and discussing these stories affect your idea of God?

To go:

Take some time this week to read the following verses and consider what they tell us about God as seeker, especially in light of what we discovered in Jesus’ stories in Luke 15. Use the table of contents in your Bible to help you find the references, if necessary. You can also look them up at http://www.biblegateway.com/.
Genesis 3:8
Leviticus 26:12
Ezekiel 34:11-12

I look forward to hearing from you!
Blessings,
David

The Parable of the Guitar

Once upon a time, there was a young man by the name of John who was given a guitar as a gift. John was genuinely happy with the guitar. He began to take lessons, and with much practice became an excellent musician. He became so good that people commented on his guitar playing.

Invitations to play gradually arrived, coming faster and faster, thicker and thicker until John realized that he needed to do something to care for and protect his guitar as he travelled to perform at these various venues.

So, John took it upon himself to make a guitar case. After all, if he was to do much travelling with his guitar, it must be protected and cared for. John spent many hours thinking about what his guitar case would look like, and how it should be constructed. After much deliberation and careful making of plans, he set to work and made a special case for his guitar. And what a case it was! It suited the guitar exactly, and was most handsome and useful.

So great was the guitar case that it drew almost as many compliments as John's guitar playing. He took to displaying the case prominently on stage as he played. How he loved that guitar case! It protected his guitar, and enabled him to travel securely and thus to share his music with many others.

But something strange began to happen - not overnight, mind you, but little by little. John began to spend more time cleaning and polishing his guitar case than he did cleaning and practising the guitar. It got to the point that he practised little at all. And you, reader, can predict the result. Without consistent practice, John's ability on the guitar lessened, imperceptibly at first, then more dramatically , until he no longer was invited to play his guitar for others.

John was saddened by this, of course, but he still had his guitar case. It was lovely to look at and to hold, and held his guitar so well. And then it happened. I'm not sure when it first happened, but today, if you were to stop John on the subway and look in his guitar case, you would find it empty. One day he simply decided that the guitar case was too heavy with the guitar inside, so he left the guitar at home and carried the empty case with him. Oh, some days he still picks up the once-loved guitar and strums it a little, but without feeling. He wistfully remembers the old days when he played for large crowds of people. But those days are gone now. Thankfully, he still has his guitar case. It brings him some happiness and allows him to walk the streets like he has a purpose.

If you see John today, say hello to him for me, will you?

The End of the World?

Here we go again!
Igor Panarin is the latest in a long line of people predicting the collapse of the United States. He stated that President Obama will impose marshall law by 2010, and the US will disintegrate into 5-6 "rump states." Skeptic Alexei Malashenko countered, "I can't imagine at all how the United States could ever fall apart." I wish I had Malashenko's confidence. It seems he's among the group of people who see the US as indestructible. However, there are signs that things aren't as they seem.
According to Paul Joseph Watson, (http://www.infowars.com/urban-warfare-drills-linked-to-coming-economic-rage/) US troops are conducting urban warfare drills, and some don't believe they are simply preparing for combat overseas. He includes this military quote: The U.S. Army War College in November released a white paper called Known Unknowns: Unconventional ‘Strategic Shocks’ in Defense Strategy Development. The report warned that the military must be prepared for a “violent, strategic dislocation inside the United States,” which could be provoked by “unforeseen economic collapse,” “purposeful domestic resistance,” “pervasive public health emergencies” or “loss of functioning political and legal order.” The “widespread civil violence,” the document said, “would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities in extremis to defend basic domestic order and human security.”
It sounds to me like there's some expectation of trouble. And there will be trouble - not only in the US, but in many parts of the world, including Canada. So what does it all mean for you and me? Well, I don't have all the answers, but I do know this: we will all end up in trouble if we trust our governments, our political leaders, bankers, business leaders, or any human institution. What is left? Let me quote from the Bible. Hebrews 12:26-28 declares, At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens." The words "once more" indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.
Only God is left. Everything that "can be shaken" is being shaken. We can only trust in God.
Now, I'm not saying that everything will be as bad as some are predicting, but it could be. Whether things are good or bad with the economy, the government, the world, God is still God. When things begin to shake, I want to hold onto the One who will not be moved.
Panarin may be right, but I'll trust in God. Now if the US citizens would look at their currency and believe the message there (In God We Trust) and not the money itself, that's a good first step.
The chorus of an old hymn written by Ira Stanphill sums it up nicely:
"Many things about tomorrow I don't seem to understand; but I know who holds tomorrow, and I know who holds my hand."
If you don't have that hope and that assurance, you can! Surrender your life to Christ, and He'll give you new life, new faith, new hope!
Be blessed!
David

Planning for Death

Well, there's a catching title! We all have death on our minds everyday, right?
I guess that's part of the problem. We don't often think about dying, though it is a reality for us all. And since we don't think about dying, we don't plan for what will happen in the event of our death. Let me tell you that this is very important for all of us. Now, let me make a disclaimer here: I am not a lawyer, nor do I pretend to be one. I write only from my own experience, and want to share with you what I have learned.
We will all die sooner or later and for the well-being of our families we need to take time to have our things in order. To do that, there are several items that need to be addressed.
1. Your will. Everyone needs a will, drawn up and signed by a lawyer. It will cost you a few hundred dollars, but it's worth every penny. Wills are not just for the elderly. We all will die, and have no guarantee of when that will happen, so we must be prepared. Your will needs to address what happens to your money, stuff and debts after you die. Will everything go to your spouse, if you are married? Who will care for your children if they are still underage? How will your assets be divided? This is where many family disputes arise. If you want certain things to go to certain individuals, specify that exactly in writing. Most parents want to be fair in the division of their assets among their children. The trouble is, what is fair? You might divide cash between some, and the house among other children, but things can drastically change between when you make that decision and when your will is put into effect. In your will you also need to appoint executors. These individuals are given the task of carrying out your wishes and ensuring that your assets and heirs are dealt with properly. Think carefully about whom you appoint to this position: will they work well together? Are they likely to be alive to do the job? Can you trust them? Will the family respect their decisions? If there are expected issues (disagreements, etc) it might be advisable to appoint someone who is not part of the family and has no connections. It will cost your estate, but some people appoint their lawyer as executor, since they are a neutral party (unless your lawyer is your brother!).
2. You also need to name someone as power of attorney. They are empowered to take control of your finances should you become incapacitated and no longer able to look after yourself. Again, this should be someone who you can trust with your money, as they will be given access to all of it! They will be authorized to make decisions on your behalf. Having this in place is very important. If you do not appoint a power of attorney, the government will appoint someone for you, and can make the whole situation very difficult.
3. Everyone also needs to appoint someone as power of attorney for personal care. Should you become incapacitated, this person will make decisions regarding your medical care, housing, etc. Along with this is a living will. This sets out in writing what your wishes are regarding health care, organ donation, etc.

Well, I'm certain there's more that could be covered here. I'll direct you to some resources that may be helpful to you. The following websites and resources have been very informative for me:
http://www.familyfight.com/ Two lawyers have written a book entitled The Family Fight: Planning to Avoid It. I would highly recommend this book as mandatory reading when planning your estate.
http://www.canadianbusiness.com/my_money/planning/estate/article.jsp?content=20031111_112340_4356 This may help you to track down other resources as well.
http://www.attorneygeneral.jus.gov.on.ca/english/family/pgt/livingwillqa.pdf This is a government document dealing with power of attorney and living wills.

Before I end, I must also say that planning for death is not limited to our assets. The Bible says that after death we will stand before God for judgment. Jesus is described as our advocate (or lawyer). Why wouldn't you want the best lawyer you can have? It all begins by surrendering your life now to Christ and then following Him daily. He will make a huge difference in your life if you let Him.

Be blessed!
David

Somebody else always says it better!

I wish I was a better writer, and thinker, and well, better almost anything!
But I can recognize a good thought when I see it or hear it, and when I do, I begin wishing I had said it or wrote it. I've never met him, but he seems like a guys' kind of guy. He doesn't write like a follower of Jesus in a blatant sort of way, but he gives the glimmering impression he's met Jesus before.
Neil's more recent column caught my eye and my imagination last week. He called it "Decide what you are for, not against." You can find his column online here: http://newsdurhamregion.com/opinion/article/107470. Just over a week ago, we had the opportunity to go back and pick some of the fruits of our labour. The plants we put into the ground took root and bore much fruit!
The berries were big, juicy and delicious! Joel was in his element. He filled a 4 litre pail in no time at all. We were astounded, because he finished so much faster than either my wife or I did. Of course, he wanted to be done so he could go play with his friends. It wasn't until we got home and sorted through the berries that we discovered how he finished so quickly. Some of his berries were a little over-ripe, and some were not quite ripe enough. However, he did end up with 2/3 of a bucket of great strawberries.
It was great to pick some of the fruit of what I had planted. The question then becomes one of spiritual fruit. Are you planting the seed of God's Word in the people around you? I'm reminded of the words of St. Francis of Assisi: "Always preach the gospel; if necessary, use words."
What are you planting, and what kind of fruit is resulting?
Happy harvesting!
David

This One's for the Guys (well, women can read it too!)

I've been doing some thinking recently, spurred on by some reading I've been doing.

Guys, the next time you're in church, take a look around and notice how many men (or how few, as the case may be) are in church with you. It's a problem that we as the church must deal with. Statistics show that women outnumber men in church almost 2 to 1. In some instances the ratio is even greater. The question then is: where are all the men, and why don't they come to church?

My thinking about this was inspired by a book I read a year or so ago: Why Men Hate Going to Church, by David Murrow. I've also read some books (one being Wild at Heart) by John Eldredge. These writers strive to help us rethink what it is to be a male follower of Jesus Christ.
Here's a couple of sites that I encountered today in which the authors state their opinions on the issue. Check them out:
http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2008/april/27.48.html?start=3
http://eugenecho.wordpress.com/2008/04/22/ultimate-fighting-jesus/
I've also just started reading The Church Impotent: The Feminization of Christianity by Leon J. Podles. I'll keep you posted.

I want to be a church that helps men be real men; a church where change comes on the inside, but not necessarily on the outside; where we don't need to be ashamed of our masculinity.
Guys, think about the men you work with: would you be comfortable inviting them to your church? If not, what would need to change to make it easier to invite them?

I think we have created a picture of Jesus as meek and mild, loving and tame. There are those aspects to Jesus, but there's so much more. He challenged and confronted, used sarcasm and pointed jabs at his critics, and took a whip to clear out the temple courts. He still challenges today, but we often miss or omit that part of who Jesus is.

This year, we are planning something different for men at The Gathering Place on Father's Day - June 15, 2008. I challenge you to invite the men around you to be here with you!
And, I challenge you to respond to this post. I want to hear what you have to say! Leave a comment below for all to see. Well, would you think to find God in this column? I went on a retreat with a group of people committed to learning more about what it means to follow Jesus. They are serious about their faith, their food, and their fun! We ate way too much, stayed up way too late (at least some of us, well, not me, them!), and had a great time!
Church can never be the same, because we are not the same, and the church is us! We're bursting out beyond the walls, ready to infiltrate our neighbourhoods, our workplaces and our homes with the reality and love of God in Jesus.
It's a scary realization, really. It's very safe and comfortable to stay within the "church circle," associating with our Christians friends, avoiding the challenges of truly living in and serving our community. I'm not sure where this will all lead us, but I am sure that we want to be following Jesus, being led by Him.
Every journey begins with one small step. We certainly got the opportunity to do that when we travelled recently to Nova Scotia (more about that in a later post). We spent two nights in Quebec (one going, one coming) and encoutered some people who did not speak English, or at least not very well, and they encountered some people (us!) who did not speak French very well! Some did speak English and did their best to serve us well. Those who spoke only French did their best to understand us, while we did our best to understand and be understood. It underscored for me the importance of learning and striving to communicate with other people using language and terminology they would understand. My mother-in-law doesn't understand or speak any French and is adamant that, if people live in Canada, they need to speak English! Too often that is the attitude of the church and many Christians. We carry on speaking in 'Christianese', oblivious to the fact that those outside the church and church/Christian culture have no idea what we're talking about. If we would take the time to listen to others, we would realize that they are struggling with and concerned about the same issues as we are.
Parlez-vous Francais? Sprechen zie deutsch?
It all begins by listening. It's amazing what you'll learn as you take the time to get to know the people around you.
Blessings,
David

It was a good day for picking

I spent a day two months ago planting strawberries (see a previous posting). Well, a couple of weeks ago we picked some strawberries. It was an interesting experience. I've picked lots of strawberries over the years, most when I was a teenager or younger. There were lots of times I went with my mom as a kid to pick strawberries. Some summers we picked 60-100 quarts of them! The fruit is delicious, and good for you too.
Anyway, back to our recent experience: My wife, son, mother-in-law and I picked a couple of pails-full. It was my son's first time in the strawberry patch. He loves strawberries! He would eat a whole quart if we let him. I showed him how to find the berries: lift up the leaves and look underneath. Check eat berry before you pick it; you don't want any white or green spots. I think he put as many into his mouth as into the pail. He had fun, and learned more about where strawberries come from.
Now, some of you may be thinking that I picked the strawberries I helped plant two months ago, but that's not the case. Strawberries planted this year will not produce fruit until next year. You've got to plant in faith and wait for the harvest. When the harvest is ready, be prepared to work hard.
As followers of Jesus, we must be always planting seeds, but we must wait for the harvest. The fruit does not appear overnight. But a harvest will come! We must always be looking for ripe fruit, ready for harvesting, and not just where we planted seeds. Who knows where seeds have been planted? The Gardener will let us know when the crop is ready, and when He does, we need to be ready to work.
Are you working? There's a harvest out there if we know where to look and what to look for!
Blessings,
David

Wasn't That a Party!?!

What a Canada Day we had! I must confess that I didn't skip church. I was speaking at a church in Ajax in the morning - you know, they were desperate and so they asked me to fill in! : )
A few days prior, we talked to a couple of friends about possibly having a party on Canada Day, but there were no definite plans. So, when we got home from church, we thought it would be good to do something. We began calling lots of different people, giving them only a few hours notice to come to a Canada Day BBQ at our house. If everybody showed up, we would have had almost 30 people there. Some were away, some couldn't come, and so we had 15 people altogether. We called some who didn't have a lot of connections and maybe wouldn't be doing anything else that day. A couple of them showed up, and it was nice to see everyone warm up to one another.
We didn't have anything fancy, just some burgers and sausages, along with salads (some brought by friends) and some finger desserts. We even had some Canada Day ice cream, also brought by friends. I've never seen it before. It's made by Chapmans, and it's called "Canadian Vanilla, Eh." It's vanilla ice cream with a red maple leaf insert in the middle. You serve it in slices so everyone gets a cross section of the maple leaf in their serving. We even sang O Canada as it was being served. (I didn't intend this, but I just jokingly sang the first few words as I saw the ice cream sitting on all the plates, and then others just joined in and there was no turning back.) Later, we drove down to the waterfront, parked on sidestreets and walked down to the bottom of Liverpool Rd to watch the fireworks. It was really crowded! But it was great to sit with friends (many of whom had never met each other before) and enjoy it.
It was a great day. It was one of my more memorable church experiences. It was lots of work, and cost a little, but getting together with friends, family and neighbours is always worth it!
Now, I'd like to hear your Canada Day adventures! Who will be first?
Blessings,
David

Skipping Church

Psst! Want a reason to skip the usual church service this Sunday? Have I got a suggestion for you: Have a Canada Day party!
Here's the plan: invite your neighbours, friends, maybe even a few Christians. Host a barbecue to celebrate Canada Day in you neighbourhood. Provide the meat, and ask your guests to bring salads or desserts. Specifically ask someone to make and bring a special Canada Day cake. My personal favourite is a strawberry cake covered with dream whip and then decorated with cut strawberries to look like a Canadian flag.
What do you do at the party? Play hymns, give an altar call - you know, the usual things you'd expect in a church service. Of course you know I'm kidding! (I hope you know I'm kidding!)
Play games with the kids, sit around and relax, get to know your neighbours. You could take some time to have a few people share what they appreciate about Canada.
When it's time for the fireworks in your municipality, travel together, set up your blankets and lawnchairs and get ready to take in the show!
Now that you've gotten to know your neighbours, continue to foster relationships with them. There's no agenda here, just an opportunity to build community. How are we as followers of Jesus to have an impact in our communities and neighbourhoods if we spend all of our time in church, church activities, and only with Christians? Your neighbours need you to get to know them, and you need them to get to know you. You'd be surprised to find out that God is at work in your neighbourhood if you'll just take the time to slow down, look around, and see God's Spirit at work.
May God bless you this week, and enjoy Canada Day!
By the way, if you gather together with one or two other Christians for a party with your neighbours, you won't be skipping church: you are the church!
If your pastor objects, tell him or her to come talk to me. I'll be glad to discuss ecclesiology with them!
Are you following Jesus, or are you asking Him to follow you?
David

It was a good day for planting...

I was planting strawberries the other day. No, they are not mine, though I'm sure my son would be very happy if they were! Friends of ours bought a small farm and are venturing into the garden produce business, and decided to plant strawberries. I was called upon to help, so I went out for a few hours last Saturday. It was both dull and interesting work at the same time, if that makes any sense. It was monotonous, in that you're doing the same thing again and again, but it was interesting in that I got to see how the strawberry planter works.
It's pulled behind the tractor and has two seats on it. The two people seated there take turns feeding small strawberry plants into the holders, which cycle down and deposit them into the freshly-created furrow. At the same time, water dribbles down into the furrow to provide some initial moisture for the new transplants. It takes some practice. If you don't get the plants in just right, they'll fall out of the holders too soon, or they'll stick and come back up and around.
Some of the time, I was planting with their oldest girl, about 9 years old, who I began calling Strawberry Shortcake. She was very good at the job, often putting in two to my one.
I thought of how God wants to grow us and provides the best possible conditions for us. Sometimes we don't stick with it and fall out. For some Christians, they don't want to be planted and grow. They prefer to stick to the familiar situations of church and home, rotating through an endless cycle, going around and around but never growing or producing any fruit. It brings up the question: are you willing to be planted where God can use you, or do you want to just stick around, dry up and not amount to anything? Getting planted sometimes seems lonely, discouraging, or even frightening, but it's where we can be the most effective.
Have a good day, and get planted!
Blessings,
David
P.S. Don't give up on commenting on the previous post "If I Could Start a Church."
For those who are looking for good books to read, check out Organic Church by Neil Cole. I have only begun to read it, but it promises to be a challenging read.

If I Could Start a Church...

Here's a question for you: if you could start a church, what would it look like?
I've been doing lots of reading, thinking and praying about this question of late. We have been talking about developing "The Gathering Place West" for some time now. We always thought of it as being a church plant in the more traditional sense; that is, starting a new service in another location with the aim to reach more people and give more opportunity for ministry.
However, of late, thoughts have been turning to other avenues and approaches, hence my question. What DOES a church look like?
What constitutes a 'church service'?
Let me deal with some presuppositions here, those things that are non-negotiable:
1. any approach to church includes the understanding that we are absolutely committed to reaching people for Jesus.
2. community is important, in that we need to be connected to one another as followers of Jesus.
3. Jesus is the architect of the church - "I will build my church," he said. Whatever we do must be in step with Him and His leading.
You may think of some other things that you would consider 'non-negotiable'.
What I want is to hear from you on these things.
I'm changing the format of the blog for now. What I want it to be is a forum where we can exchange ideas, disagree with one another. It's not 'my' blog anymore. I want it to be 'our' blog, where we can communicate with one another and have some ongoing dialogue.
Shortly we will talk about meeting together in person to discuss these things further.
For now, I want to hear from you!
Blessings,
David

I Blew a Gasket

I blew a gasket the other day. (Not mine, mind you. However, my wife will tell you that I do have a tendency to lose it a little every once in a while. She seems to sense it better than I do, and will tell me to go off somewhere for a while to cool off.)
The blown gasket is in our car. It's an intake manifold gasket to be exact. It turns out that the cost of the repair is more than the car is worth. As a result, we have been looking for another car. That is an experience in and of itself. We have been looking through the Lemonaid Guide, Consumer Reports and the internet.
Every car is rated differently. Some vehicles get a good rating, and others are panned. Then you read about individuals' reviews on different vehicles and you get more confused: some would never buy another one like it, while others can't say enough good about it.
I think sometimes we treat people that way; they're viewed as a commodity or product, and treated as such. That's not the way God views us. We are individual and unique creations, created by God to fulfill His purposes. That is going to look different for each one of us. We must not expect that everyone is like us or even should be like us. Neither do they have the same approaches, viewpoints or values. Still, each person is created by God and valuable.
I know I need a constant reminder to take the time to get to know the people around me, to treat them as individuals, as people!
Jesus said that a person is worth more than a sparrow, which is valuable in God's eyes. (Read the story here:http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2010:29-31;&version=65;) That means that God is concerned with our worth and well-being. That means that you and I need to be concerned with the well-being of those around us.
I know that you are of great worth!
Blessings,
David

Appreciations

It's a busy time of the year. Of course, what time of year is not busy?
But it seems that right now there is a lot going on. Here it is only the first full week of February, but already I have been contacting people about their involvement in the Holy Week services coming up at our church - that's the first week of April, almost two months away!
Anyway, my thoughts are about the people I have been contacting for involvement. They are dedicated individuals who give of themselves - their time, energy and talents - to serve God by serving others.
This being appreciation month in our congregation, I want to send out a great big "I appreciate you!" to all those who serve faithfully as ushers, hosts and parking lot attendants. Many people take for granted what you do, and some are not even aware of what you do. Thank you for living beyond yourselves, for sacrificing time with your family to stand by the doors, in the foyer, or in the freezing cold parking lot to make someone else's experience at The Gathering Place a better experience. If no one else sees or cares what you do, be assured that your Heavenly Father sees and has something special in mind for you.
That being said, there's always room for more people to be involved. It would be nice to have 200 people available to be ushers, hosts, and parking lot attendants on a regular basis. Would you like to be involved? I'd love to hear from you!
But your involvement doesn't need to be limited to these areas. Just today I received a request for someone to help with a move. There's always a need for people to help - with moving, personal care, house maintenance, comforting those in difficult circumstances. It would be great to have a database that I could access, giving me info at a moment's notice when a need arises. If you would be willing to help out and make yourself available in this way, please let me know.
On this topic, here is a book I've been reading. In When God is the Life of the Party, Norm & Becky Wretlind write about being intentional about having an impact in our neighbourhoods for God. I haven't finished reading it yet, but it has been interesting and challenging so far.
Where can God use you? type='text'>Where does church fit in my life?

Church. When people hear that word, they have different reactions. Some grow cold and shudder. Others recall warm memories, while still others relate their current experiences. Whatever the response, we can be guaranteed some kind of response.
For some people, church is about familiar rituals. These rituals evoke feelings of worship, fond memories or familiarity, sometimes all at once. Church is boring to some who have been part of it in the past - and to some who are presently involved! To some people, church is a foreign word. They're never quite sure what goes on behind those doors.
It seems to me that we have got it all wrong. There's no right or wrong way to do church. Who says that church is about some songs and a sermon? What is wrong is when Christians will not be the church. Church is about becoming real with one another, whether Christians or not. You can't limit this to a two hour time period on Sunday morning, or any other time period, for that matter. As followers of Jesus, we are to be the church - always. That means that when you invite another family in for dinner or a social time, you are having church.
Let's open up church to be what God intended it to be. Let's throw off the constraints that we too often put on ourselves. Certainly, be a committed part of a church, but be the church at all times and in all places.

Will you join me?
I'd like to hear your experiences and thoughts on this.
Blessings,
David
P.S.: Here's a book for you to read: Emerging Churches, written by Eddie Gibbs & Ryan Bolger. I've just begun reading it and have found it challenging and stimulating.

Funerals

I sat in on a funeral today. It was an interesting experience. It certainly wasn't the first funeral I've ever attended, nor will it be the last. However, it gave me pause for thought. It brought to mind a verse from the Bible. It's from Ecclesiastes 7:2. Here is how The Message translates it: "You learn more at a funeral than at a feast - after all, that's where we'll end up. We might discover something from it." A funeral reminds us that death is where we will all end up.
I sat and listened to those left behind talk about their mother and grandmother. I had only met this woman once, for a brief moment. But in the hour plus that we heard about her, I felt that I got to know her, at least a little bit.
This thought came to me: how will others speak of me when it comes time for my funeral? I know that funerals are a time for fond memories and often, looking through rose-coloured glasses. But when it really comes down to it, what will people have to say?
Will it be:
I'm glad it's over - life was miserable with him!
or
He loved God and it showed in how he treated everyone - family, friends, strangers. I'm going to miss him!

I know what I'd like prefer it to be. Now that I've figured that out, I guess I have lots of work to do.
Lord, I'm going to need your help - lots of it!

Blessings,
David

Getting Messages...

We all get messages of one kind or another. Sometimes they are clear but often we cannot understand what is being said or communicated, or even who the message is from. Then there is the problem of someone else taking a messagge for you. My mother-in-law has a magnet on her fridge that has a picture of a teenaged boy with the line, "mom, somebody called for you from somewhere and wants you to call them back." Messages have a way of not being very clear, expecially when they come second-hand. To try to solve at least part of this problem, we just had voicemail installed at the office. It's given us something to play around with abd get used to. Already we're getting positive feedback about it - things like, "it's about time!"
Getting a message across is very important. The way in which it is presented is also important. If someone in your family comes to you and says, 'we need to talk,' it usually indicates something serious.
In 1967 Marshall McLuhan wrote a book called The Medium is the Massage. "Massage" was really supposed to be "message," but somebody at the publisher goofed, and McLuhan apparently wanted it left as is. He believed that how the message is communicated is as important as the message itself, hence his title. This is my book of the week. I just finished reading it, and couldn't get over how profound and apt it is for today! Other than some older vocabulary, you would think he was talking about the situation today.
Well, McLuhan is right in many respects. How we communicate is as important as what we communicate. I find it interesting to apply McLuhan's thought to Jesus. Jesus is both the medium (he became a human) AND the message (a demonstration of God's love for all of humanity and creation).
But the message doesn't stop there. All who are followers of Jesus are to carry the message of God's love and grace to everyone around them. Paul said this: "Your very lives are a letter that anyone can read by just looking at you. Christ himself wrote it—not with ink, but with God's living Spirit; not chiseled into stone, but carved into human lives—and we publish it." This is found in 2 Corinthians 3:3, from The Message. Here's a link: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Corinthians%203%20;&version=65;
Those who call themselves Christians are often accused of being hypocrites, because what's written on their lives does not match what comes out of their mouths. I guess I'm often guilty as charged.
I have to continually ask myself (many times a day!), what message am I sending?
Well, how about you?
Blessings,
David

Happy New Year!

Has it really been that long?!? I just checked and realized my last post was on December 12. That was three weeks ago! Not that there are too many of you waiting with bated breath to see what witticisms and such I might post here. I'm sorry to disappoint, but I'm not that witty. Of course, that's no surprise to those who know me!
Christmas is over and done with, unless you are Orthodox, which means your celebration is coming shortly. It doesn't matter the date. What matters is the attitude of your heart. The external celebrations are nice, but sometimes they only detract from the reality of Christmas. In fact, as my nephew Jeff said so well, these things serve (or should, at least) to remind of the real reason for and significance of Christmas. In case you don't know, the real reason for Christmas is presents. One present, to be exact. That present was and is Jesus, the Son of God, who came as a human being to bring the message of God's love to the world, and ultimately, to die and rise again for the sins of the world. There's no way you can celebrate and realize all the significance of that one great Gift in just one day, or even a whole season, of celebration. The reality of Christmas should be foremost in the thoughts and attitudes and lives of all Christians all year long! Too few people live that way. The reality of Jesus is relegated to one day or even a few weeks of Christmas. The rest of the year, life goes on as usual, with God being pushed off to the side.
We all struggle with finding time, with putting God and His demands on our lives in the proper place and perspective. Sometimes life gets busy and other concerns push in and take over, demanding all of our time and attention. How do we maintain a balance? How do we find time for a personal time with God, a time for prayer and reading the Bible? It comes down to making time. Yes, we are all busy and have so many things to do. But don't we find the time for those things we really want to do? We stay up later to work on a project or report because we wanted to spend time visiting with friends or family in the evening. We get up early to get in a little exercise time before we get ready for work. We eat lunch at our desks because we are facing a deadline and need to squeeze in extra time to get it done. My point? We always find the time for what is really important to us. Sometimes we decide that something really important is not so important when something comes along that we'd like to do more. So, how do we make time for God and the Bible? A specific time each day can be helpful. From what I remember reading, you have to do something 21 times before it becomes a habit. So, pick a time that will work for you (Be honest with yourself - if you're not a morning person, don't determine to get up at 4:30 in the morning, because in all likelihood, you won't stick with it) and do it for at least three weeks. Hopefully by that time it will have become a habit. Besides that, living as a Christian is about living in the moment with God. Be conscious of what God might be saying to you at all times. Offer short prayers of thanks and/or petitions throughout your day. Developing this God-consciousness can only help us grow as Christians.
Does this mean that I have it all worked out, that I'm faithful in prayer and Bible-reading all the time? No, no, NO! But I hope that this can be a time of new beginnings for each of us as we begin this new year.
Have you made your New Year's Resolutions? I'd be happy to hear from you!
Blessings,
David
P. S. A quick update on one book: In a previous post I mentioned Anne Rice's Christ the Lord. I had not read it at that point. I've just finished reading it, and recommend it highly. Take time to read the Author's Note at the end of the book. In approximately 20 pages, Anne traces her spiritual journey and the research she has put into the book. It's very informative and encouraging reading!

Books, books and more books!

I thought I would do something a little different.
For those who like to read, and even those who don't here are some of my recommendations for good books. Well, it's surprising what a few decorations (my wife and son did a great job!) and some nice Christmas music will do to set the mood. Those who know me will not be surprised to learn that my favourite Christmas CD is the Vince Guaraldi trio's music from the TV special "Charlie Brown's Christmas." My wife doesn't share my taste in music. She's tired of Christmas music after two or three songs.
My family is coming to our house for Christmas this year on December 28. I know some would say that can't be - Christmas is only on December 25. Well, Christmas is about celebrating Jesus' birth and God's gift to the world, and about spending time with family and friends, so Christmas can be celebrated any day of the year.
My wife is getting a little anxious, because there's so much to do, and so little time to do it. I guess that's my cue to help out a little more. Well, I did start some Christmas shopping today, popping out to pick up a couple of things for my wife (SHH! Don't tell her!).
The question is how to approach Christmas with our son. He's three and a half, and excited about Christmas. We want to give him good gifts, but we don't want to instill the wrong impression in him that Christmas is about getting lots of gifts. He has more toys than he can play with now. He doesn't really lack anything. So, what do we get him for Christmas? On the other hand, we don't want to make Christmas too dull either.
I think that's the issue with many of us. We get caught up in the commercialism of the season and our society (because this bug is not limited to this season only!) and end up spending too much money on things we don't really need or sometimes even want. I know I catch myself wanting more things. But do I really need them? I might be able to make a good case for needing something, especially if it's a tool of some kind or a book, but in reality I can live without it.
In the midst of all our normal celebrations and trappings of the season, let's not lose Jesus, the real gift of Christmas.
Blessings,
David

Snow!

Now it's the first week of December, and finally we are getting some chillier weather and the smallest hint of snow to come. Sometimes I forget what it's like to see the world through the eyes of a child. Our son was excited to look out the window the other day and see a little bit of snow. My response is often more like 'Snow - oh great! The streets will be clogged, traffic will be slow, and snow and dirt will make a mess everywhere!'
But there's an upside to snow. It's bright, clean, crisp and cold. It brings the possibility of building a snowman, sliding down hills, and pulling our son on the sled.
There's beauty to see in this world in all seasons. Early this morning I got up and saw the full moon shining through our windows. It was a magnificent sight. It was far to the north, which would have prompted my dad to say that indicates cold weather to come. It's funny what you remember about people that are now gone.
My mom passed away ten years ago. In a few days, it will be seven years since my brother died. And early January will mark four years since my dad has been gone. What we have remaining are memories; memories clouded by time and wishful thinking sometimes. But I have to remind myself that while I have some good and not so good memories, I must focus on those who are with me now. The things that I remember of loved ones who have passed away stem from positive (and sometimes not so positive) experiences. I need to be able to live in the moment, to make the most of the time I have now, rather than living in the past or the future.
Well, my thoughts seem to be coming out rather scattered today. Here's a final thought. Clean white snow reminds us of the forgiveness that God offers us. The Bible says that our sins can be made as white as snow (Isaiah 1:18 - read it here: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=isaiah%201:18;&version=51;). God offers us forgiveness if we will but ask.
After all, that's the very reason that Jesus came, and the reason we celebrate Christmas!
Blessings,
David

Christmas Already?

Life seems to go by so quickly! Here it is the last week of November, and December and Christmas are looming large. Where does the time go? It seems like it was just a few weeks ago that we were enjoying summer and some holidays. Now, it's only 4+ weeks until Christmas. And before Christmas arrives, there are Christmas celebrations and banquets, Christmas pageants and musicals, and the numerous visits with family and friends. All of these are wonderful and can be highly satisfying, besides being uplifting. Each one taken on its own is a beautiful event. But add them all together, and we risk running ourselves ragged, and ending up wishing it was all over.
I hope to be able to take some time to reflect and relax this Christmas season. I wish for time to just kick back and enjoy the real celebration - the coming of Jesus as a baby to bring salvation to the world. I can't quite shake the feeling that the truth and reality of Christmas may get lost in all the busy-ness. I don't want that to happen for me and my family, nor to you and yours.
There is a wonder to Christmas, a magic that is beyond our comprehension, but that beckons us to experience a glimpse of this reality. I want to take a deep breath, slow down, and drink in the wonder of it all. It's hard for me to do, as I usually am looking over the horizon to see what's coming next, so much so that I often miss what's here and now.
Christmas is my favourite time of year. I love the music, the lights, the time spent with family and friends. I just don't want to miss it. And I'm afraid I might.
I don't want to miss a moment of it all. I don't want you to miss a thing either. Will you agree with me to take it all one day at a time?
I've got a book entitled "Watch for the Light: Readings for Advent and Christmas." I have a couple of extra copies. If you would like one, drop me a line and we can arrange for you to pick it up.
May the Christ of Christmas touch your heart deeply beginning today!
Blessings,
David
P.S. Happy Thanksgiving to our American friends!

A LIttle Light Work

Well, it's Monday and the work week has begun again. Sometimes it feels like it never really ends doesn't it? It may feel like there is no ending and beginning, just a running together of the weeks.
Life seems to be so busy. When there's not work to do (when's that?), there's stuff to do at home, not to mention the addition of all the other stuff we choose to do: recreation, entertainment, etc. When recreation and entertainment get to be a burden, it may have lost its effectiveness!
I usually have Fridays off. However, between my son's surgery and pre- and post-op appointments, as well as additional ministry requirements lately, it feels like I haven't had a free Friday for a month or two. Not that I don't do anything on Fridays. But, a day free of lots of activities and responsibilities allows me to do some things that need doing (Now how much sense does that make? Being free of responsibilities to do other responsibilities???). Having somke freedom on Fridays allows me to grocery shop - the grocery store is much nicer and calmer in the middle of the week day than in the evening or Saturday - as well as things around the house, like fix-it jobs and laundry. I sure sound like a regular househusband, don't I? Well, if the shoe fits.... My wife works long and hard and earns more than twice what I do, even if I were working full-time. So, I guess I need to do what needs doing. After all, work is work, no matter who is doing it.
I need a reminder now and again that I don't have to do everything myself. One day Jesus addressed people like you and me: "Are you tired? Worn out?" His answer for this too-common condition? Come to me and find true rest. You can read it in Matthew 11:28-30 (Here's the link for The Message: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2011:28-30;&version=65;).
You might be asking: 'why always quote from the Bible?' Good question! I believe that it is timeless and has the answers for what we need in life. If you don't see it the same way I do, that's okay. We can still talk and I'll be praying that you will truly find God as you seek for the truth.
I'd love to hear from you!
Blessings,
David

Election: Who is the winner?

Well, the election is over, and the newly elected mayors, councillors and trustees are thanking their volunteers and getting ready to take office. Those who formerly held these offices and now find themselves out of their position are pondering what they will do with their lives now.
Congratulations to those newly elected. The people (well, a percentage of them anyway) have put their faith in you. Don't let us down! It's a great responsibility to take on these leadership positions.
I sometimes feel badly for those who find themselves out of their former positions. It brings on a time of introspection: what do I do now? What kind of contribution can I make to my community now? How am I going to pay the bills?
Well, truth be told, I don't feel sorry for all those now out of office. Some of them didn't do much. What did it for me in my local ward was seeing in the Toronto Star a list of the names of those candidates who did not accept money from developers. I based my vote largely on seeing the candidate's name on that list. I'm happy that the one I voted for was elected.
I have to be careful; it's not for me to judge, as I'm not the one out there putting myself on the line for my community. Truth be told, I have had fleeting thoughts about being involved in politics. It's likely that my psyche and ego would not be able to handle the rejection, the wild swings of emotion.
As a follower of Jesus, I'm instructed to respect those in leadership (Romans 13:1-7; read it here: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%2013:1-7&version=31). Paul instructed Timothy (and thus all followers of Jesus) to pray for all those in authority over us (I Timothy 2:1-2; see it here: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Timothy%202:1-2;&version=31;).
Whether you voted or not, pray for those who were elected last night. It's only fair, and you will be blessed. If you want a better councillor/mayor/trustee, pray for the one you've got, and you'll get a better one.
Blessings,
David

Lost sleep and kids

It's been over a week since my last post. What a week it has been! My son was in for eye surgery last week. Am I glad that's over! (I guess he is too!) I didn't sleep well for a few nights leading up to the surgery date. I know that I'm not the only parent in the world who has had a child go in for surgery. Indeed, many other children have faced far more serious operations. But, it was very difficult for me, and my wife too, I think.
What I found to be one of the hardest things was telling my son that he was going to the hospital for an operation on his eyes. He's only three years old, so we didn't want to tell him too far in advance. So, we sat him down Wednesday morning (the day before the surgery) and talked to him about going to the hospital so the doctor could make his eyes better. It showed me how trusting children often are! There was no crying, protests, or the like. I guess it makes it easier when you don't really know what an operation or surgery is about. He didn't know enough to be upset or fearful. How I wish I could be like that!
Even harder than talking to him about the surgery was taking him to the hospital, putting the hospital pajamas on him, and finally, watching him walk through the big doors into the OR area with the nurse. My wife and I both looked at each other with tears in our eyes, tears we dared not show until our son was behind those doors. He has had a surgery before to correct a small birth defect. However, he was only about 15 months old at the time. He probably doesn't remember anything from that operation, although with his memory, you never know. Anyway, we were left sitting, watching and waiting. He, on the other hand, went off with no protests, no tears, stepping out into yet another new experience. I marvel at his ability to roll with the punches, to carry on no matter what the circumstances.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could all be a little like that? There are so many things that life throws our way. It's a good thing we don't know the end from the beginning, or we might never begin at all. I'm reminded of the time that Jesus took a little child and stood him/her in front of all the adults listening to him teach. He said, unless you become like a little child, you cannot enter the kingdom of God. (See the verse here: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=matthew%2018:2-5;&version=65;) In other words, faith comes by simple trust. We likely won't understand everything. But Jesus calls us to act on the things that we do understand. Jesus gives a simple invitation: come, follow me.
I'm trying to do that, one step at a time.
If you'd like to know more, or would like help in understanding any of this, post a comment and we can talk some more.
Blessings,
David

Challenges & Promises

I think it's going to be a challenging week. My son is scheduled for surgery this week. His eyes turn in and the surgery is supposed to correct that. From everyone I've talked to, it's supposed to be a routine operation. Yeah, yeah, I know all that. But this is my son! Is any operation really routine? Anything can happen; there are no guarantees in life. On top of that, the surgeon gave us the spiel that she is required to give: there is always the chance he could go blind, or other complications. Thanks. I needed to hear that. I know they a required to say that to cover their legal butts, but it doesn't do a lot to inspire confidence!
What really makes things easier to handle is knowing that I can talk to God at any time. If anybody can handle this situation, God can. Besides this, I've had many friends and family say that they would be praying for my son and us before during and after the surgery. Without this support, I don't know how I would handle everything. I think I look like I have everything together, but looks can be deceiving.
But God has promised to be with us, to help us through the difficult times. No matter what happens, God will be there for us.
Other than that, life is going along smoothly. Busy but smooth. I'd like things to settle down a little bit, but I don't see that happening any time soon.
Yesterday we had a celebration service at our church. The building was full. Celebration services really don't do anything for me. I'm usually too busy running around making sure things are going ok to even notice what is happening in the service. Sometimes I'm just glad it's over with.
Anyway, life goes on, and we live to struggle against the challenges of another day, of another week.
I appreciate your prayers for me and my family.
Blessings,
David

Welcome!

I'm new to this blogging experience. However, inspired by my nephew and an article in the Toronto Star, I'm dipping my toes into the big pool of the blog.
What I'm aiming for is a forum in which I can share my scattered thoughts and get feedback from readers. In effect then, this is not my blog, but a community space for us to share together.
Let me tell you a little about myself. I am a follower of Jesus. Some would say that I'm a Christian. But following Jesus is much more than what we often think about Christians and Christianity. I want to reflect the grace and love that exude from Jesus Himself. Do I do that very well? Duh! Of course not! But as I keep on following Jesus, focusing on his goals and dreams and not my own, the road only leads up.
Besides that large and central aspect of my life, I am married with one young son. They are the loves of my life. Reaching further out, I have extended family that I love and care for, even if they don't always see it or reciprocate (yeah, you Jeff!).
I'm part of a growing gathering of people who are purposing to follow Jesus as well. Sometimes I get the privilege and challenge of sharing thoughts from the Bible with them. It's a challenge to understand what the Bible says and then communicate that to others in a way that is understood and that connects. After all, what good is the Bible if we don't read, understand and live it out in our daily lives, both individually and collectively?
I'm not sure where you're at with respect to Jesus. But I invite you to blog along with me so we can learn more together.
I recently talked about Jesus and His response to sin. One day when He was teaching, the religious leaders of the day brought in a woman accused of adultery. They wanted to trap Jesus into saying or doing something incriminating. Jesus saw through the whole scheme and turned the tables on them. "Anyone without sin could throw the first stone," (the punishment called for in Moses' law) He said. Now, the religious leaders were no different from you and me. We've all sinned, made mistakes, however you want to say it. So they had no choice but to leave. Jesus says to the accused woman, "I don't condemn you. Go and sin no more." (You can find the account in the Bible in John 8:1-11 - find it online here: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=john%208:1-11&version=31) He didn't condone what she did, but He extended grace and love to her. He extends that grace to everyone else, too.
I've got a lot of learning to do. I find it hard to be gracious. But that's the reality of following Jesus: being challenged to live as He calls me to, not according to my own agenda.
Hey, I've said more than a mouthful.
I'd like to hear from you.
Bless you!
David
